Principal's Message
Kia ora e te whānau
What a fantastic way to wrap up the term - on the sideline for the Senior Volleyball Final, and even better, taking the win! A great finish to what has been a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding term across the board.
To our Year 9s - he mihi nui ki a koutou. It has been great to see the progress you've made as you settle into high school life. Navigating a new environment, building friendships, and adjusting to new routines is no small feat, and we’re proud of the way you’ve risen to the challenge.
Over the past couple of weeks, students across the school have been completing those all-important assessments. For our junior ākonga, this is a new learning experience - learning how to manage the pressure that can come with deadlines and assessment expectations. Developing these skills now will set you up well for the senior years ahead.
For our senior students, it’s pleasing to see many of you already with runs on the board towards your NCEA academic goals. Keep going - we see your hard work, and it will pay off.
We've been blessed with beautiful weather this week, a lovely lead-in to the holidays. Today, the Easter Bunny made an early visit to acknowledge the wonderful term we’ve had - every student received a chocolate Easter egg as a small thank you.
Wishing you all a safe and joyful Easter celebration, and a well-deserved break. We look forward to seeing you back refreshed and ready for Term Two.
Striking Force and Patterns:
STEMM Learning in Action
Last Thursday, a group of our Year 12–13 Pūhoro STEMM Academy students attended the Wānanga Māpūrau at Hastings Racecourse. They explored the science of striking pou with rākau, captured acceleration using GoPros to calculate force, and tackled complex mathematical codes to uncover patterns in tukutuku.
A powerful example of mātauranga Māori at the heart of STEMM learning.
Back-to-Back Hawke’s Bay Champions!
The HGHS Senior A Girls Volleyball team entered this year’s tournament with a clear goal: to defend their title and showcase the strength of their teamwork and skill.
Their first major challenge came in the semi-final against a determined Napier Girls’ High School team. In a tense and tightly contested match, our girls rose to the occasion with grit and unity, securing a 3–1 victory and earning their place in the final.
There, they faced another strong side in Karamū High School. Demonstrating outstanding resilience and confidence, the team dominated all three sets, clinching a 3–0 win and once again claiming the title of Hawke’s Bay Champions.
We’re also proud to acknowledge the outstanding individual efforts of three players named to the Tournament Team:
Imila Valaoga – who also took out Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament
Alice Petersen Wender
Hazel-Maree Naoia
A huge congratulations to the team for their incredible achievement – an inspiring example of what dedication, skill, and teamwork can accomplish!
