Term One Week 1

Principal’s Message

Kia ora koutou

Welcome to a new school year at Hastings Girls’ High School – Ngā Rau Huia o Ākina. As we step into 2025, I am filled with pride and excitement for the opportunities ahead. Our kura is a place where identity is valued, aspirations are nurtured, and success takes many forms.

A special welcome to our new students and international ākonga joining us this term. You are now part of a school whānau that celebrates diversity, fosters ambition, and stands strong in our values. We look forward to seeing the unique talents and perspectives you bring to our learning community.

This year is yours to shape. Whether you aspire to be a student leader, the 2025 Junior Dux, our next Head Girl, or a future school Dux, every choice you make, every challenge you take on, and every moment of perseverance will help carve the path toward your goals. But success is never a journey taken alone. Behind every student striving for excellence is the unwavering support of whānau—those who encourage, uplift, and guide. As you take on new opportunities, know that your whānau, your teachers, and your wider school community stand alongside you, believing in your potential and celebrating your achievements, big and small.

To our parents and whānau, your role in this journey is invaluable. The conversations at the dinner table, the encouragement before an exam, the reminders to push through when things get tough—these moments shape confidence and resilience. We ask for your continued support in setting high expectations—encouraging attendance, ensuring students arrive on time, and wearing our uniform with pride. These small but powerful habits build a strong foundation for success.

Let’s make 2025 a year of excellence, connection, and opportunity. Together—students, staff, and whānau—we will continue to empower, uplift, and inspire.

Welcoming Our New Students with a Heartfelt Pōwhiri

The week has started off on a high note here at Hastings Girls' High School as we welcomed our new students into our kura with a beautiful and heartfelt Pōwhiri. This special ceremony is a significant tradition for us, symbolising not only the start of a new academic journey but also the beginning of new connections and friendships within our school whānau.

It’s been wonderful to see all our new Year 9 students settling into high school life. Most are already finding their way around the campus with ease, confidently navigating their classes and daily routines. Of course, a few are still learning to master the maze of classrooms (which even some of us still get lost in from time to time!) but they’re doing so with great enthusiasm and support from both staff and their fellow students.

The energy and excitement during morning tea and lunchtime have been fantastic, with new friendships forming and students embracing the vibrant atmosphere of HGHS. Our kura feels alive with fresh faces and we’re proud of how quickly our new students are adjusting to their new environment.

Check out the photos from the Pōwhiri and some candid moments during breaks. We’re looking forward to seeing all our students grow, learn, and thrive throughout the year. Here’s to an amazing 2025 at Hastings Girls' High School!

Year 9 BBQ Invitation

We warmly invite all Year 9 students and their whānau to join us for a BBQ on Thursday 20 February from 3:30pm to 5:30pm outside Te Rourou (by the Tennis courts at the back of the school).

This is a fantastic opportunity to meet your child’s Ākina Coach and Teachers, connect with other families, and learn more about life at Hastings Girls’ High School in a relaxed and friendly setting.

We look forward to seeing you there and sharing a great afternoon together!
