Term Four Week 5
Message from the Principal
Tēnā koutou katoa
It’s been a short but action-packed week here with all our senior students on study leave as they tackle their NCEA exams. We hope each of them achieve their best!
Our annual sports exchange against Gisborne Girls’ High School brought great energy with strong performances from our Junior Volleyball, Netball and Sevens Rugby teams. We’re thrilled to announce that we retained the shield for another year and look forward to hosting the competition at home next year. In other competitions, our Debating team put up a strong effort in last week’s debate but ultimately came up short. However, we’re proud to congratulate Elizabeth Turner, who was recognised as the most promising junior debater—an exciting achievement for both Elizabeth and our Debating programme.
Next week, several exciting activities are lined up for our junior students. Our Junior A Volleyball team will be heading to Auckland for the national tournament—good luck to the team as they represent us on the big stage! Meanwhile, our Great Outdoors A Hub class will head up to Te Mata Peak to care for the trees in our HGHS plot; an important part of our commitment to environmental stewardship.
With only four weeks remaining, we’re on the home stretch to the holidays! Excitement is already building for 2025 with preparations for new classes, new students and a few new teachers. The installation of air conditioning units across the school is nearly complete ensuring we’ll be prepared for the warm summer days ahead. Our school fields, however, may face some challenges with the heat but our dedicated property team will, as always, work hard to keep our grounds looking beautiful.
Here’s to a strong finish to the term and a fantastic end to the year!

Junior Debating Competition
Last Thursday, Hastings Girls' High School faced off against Hastings Christian School in a riveting junior debating competition. The moot, "Should parents be punished for the crimes of their children?" sparked a lively exchange of ideas with both teams presenting compelling arguments and some thought-provoking insights.
Hastings Christian School ultimately emerged victorious in both debates, showing strong delivery and a well-organised approach to the moot. However, Hastings Girls' High School made impressive strides, demonstrating resilience and an eagerness to learn. Each debater from Hastings Girls showed clear improvement, skillfully engaging with the challenging topic and showcasing growth in their debating abilities.
Despite the result, the competition was a positive experience for the junior debaters at Hastings Girls' High School. They can be proud of their development this year, which was highlighted by Elizabeth Turner being recognised as the most promising junior debater. Elizabeth’s performance exemplified the team's dedication and potential and her acknowledgment was well-deserved. Overall, it has been an encouraging year and we look forward to seeing more strong performances from Hastings Girls in the future!
Exploring and Measuring the Health of Our Local Rivers
Our outdoor Hubs had an exciting day on Tuesday exploring local rivers and learning about their health. With special equipment provided by the Council, our river scientists conducted a series of tests including measuring pH levels, examining invertebrates, calculating flow rates, checking river clarity and more!
They started the day at the Tukituki River then moved on to the Clive River followed by the Ngaruroro (Pakowhai) River and wrapped up at the Tutaekuri River. The group enjoyed beautiful weather and gained valuable insights into the importance of these special local rivers.
A fantastic day of hands-on learning and discovery!
