Term Three Week 9
Message from the Principal
Tēnā koutou katoa
As Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori draws to a close, I reflect on the many highlights we have experienced throughout the week. Monday’s student-led assembly was a powerful way to set the tone for the week, with ākonga/students sharing their passion for Te Reo with the wider school community. It was a beautiful expression of pride in our language and culture. Throughout the week, students showcased their learning in an exhibition of mahi/work, designed to inspire others to learn more about Te Ao Māori. A special highlight was the lunchtime concert, where both students and staff courageously stepped up to perform in their indigenous tongues—whatever that may be. It was heartwarming to see the way our students tautoko/uplift each other, offering words of encouragement and support, creating a true sense of whanaungatanga/connection.
As we approach the end of term, I am thrilled to announce that we have a record number of senior students applying for leadership positions in 2025. It’s truly inspiring to see so many ākonga eager to contribute to the future of our kura/school. As part of the selection process, these students will present short speeches to the school community next week, showcasing their leadership qualities and vision for the year ahead. This process not only highlights their capabilities but also encourages all students to engage actively, regardless of the final outcome. However, with such a large number of applications, it’s important to acknowledge that not all will be successful in their bids for leadership. While this may lead to some disappointment, it is crucial that we support students in navigating this disappointment, as it serves as an important life lesson.
Investing in the potential of our students is key to developing the leaders of tomorrow. With this in mind, we are proud to announce that five students have been selected to attend a two-day leadership conference during the holidays. Along with other young aspiring leaders from across the country, they will engage in workshops and activities designed to strengthen their leadership skills. We know they will represent our kura with pride and return with fresh ideas and new skills they can apply within our school community.
As we approach the much-anticipated Senior Ball next week, I am filled with excitement for this wonderful event! It’s a chance for our students to come together in celebration and the positive atmosphere surrounding the ball is truly infectious. I look forward to seeing everyone dressed up and making lasting memories during this special occasion.
As we prepare for this celebration, I want to remind all students about the importance of appropriate behaviour during the event. Let’s ensure that we create a respectful and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone, allowing each student to have a memorable experience.
Additionally, as we conclude this term, it’s essential to remember that Term 4 will bring its own challenges, with exams and preparations for life beyond school on the horizon. Let’s finish the term strong and support one another as we head into this busy period.
Looking forward to a fantastic evening at the Senior Ball!
Defence Force Careers
🌟 Yesterday we were fortunate to have Star and Johnnie visit us to give a fantastic presentation about careers in the NZ Defence Forces—Army, Navy, and Air Force! 🚀 They shared their personal career journeys, the recruitment process, basic training, and all the diverse roles available to train for.
If any students are interested in applying, they recommend starting the application process at least 6 months before leaving school. 📝
Maxine and Trudi from the Ngā Ara/Pathways Department (located in the Student Centre) are here to help anyone looking to get started. Don’t hesitate to reach out! 🙌
Le Lumana'i Academy
Several of our girls had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Le Lumana'i Academy which brings together high school students from across Hawke's Bay to create and showcase a cultural performance at Toitoi. They dedicated countless hours and sacrificed their weekends to prepare and the result was a beautiful night! 🌟
This event was organised and sponsored by Mapu Maia, a Pacific Mental Health Centre aimed at uniting Pacific youth and the wider community. We're so proud of the girls and their amazing efforts! 💖👏
Celebrating Alize's success
We are thrilled to announce that Alize Ross-Araia has received a Poutama Scholarship from the University of Otago! This scholarship provides full funding for students of Māori descent to participate in the week-long Hands-On at Otago programme.
The aim of the scholarship is to inspire and support rangatahi Māori in developing their knowledge, skills, and passion for tertiary studies. It covers the programme fee including accommodation, food, and travel to and from Dunedin.
Well done Alize! We are so proud of your achievement! 🌟
