Term Three Week 4

Message from the Principal

Kia ora koutou

I hope this message finds you well. I want to take a moment to highlight some of our recent Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) opportunities and reflect on why these experiences are such an essential part of our curriculum at Hastings Girls' High School - Ngā Rau Huia o Ākina.

EOTC provides our students with the chance to engage with their learning in authentic, real-world contexts. We know that learning is most effective when it is meaningful and connected to the world around us. Whether it’s through field trips, outdoor activities, or community projects, EOTC allows our students to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to new and dynamic environments. These experiences not only enhance their academic understanding but also contribute to their personal growth and confidence.

One of the things we are most proud of is the way our students represent our school during these opportunities. Just this morning, we received feedback from someone who attended Toitū Te Reo, saying, "I was at Toitū Te Reo last week and it was awesome seeing your girls looking beautiful, involved in the festivities, representing their school proudly." This reflects the pride our students take in wearing their uniforms and how they embody our school values—pono (integrity), manaakitanga (care), whanaungatanga (relationships), kaitiakitanga (guardianship), and whakaute (respect)—in everything they do. This is a testament to the strong sense of identity and belonging that is fostered within our school.

At Hastings Girls' High School we talk a lot about 'the brand.' This concept is bigger than any one individual. When our students wear the uniform or stand as representatives of our school, they are part of a legacy that stretches back through the generations. They are not just students of today but custodians of the values, traditions, and stories of those who have gone before them. It is a privilege to be part of this story and with that privilege comes a responsibility to uphold the standards and values that define us as a community.

As we continue to provide these enriching EOTC experiences, I encourage all of us to remember the importance of representing our school with pride and integrity. Each time we step out into the community, we are not only learning and growing but also contributing to the reputation and legacy of Hastings Girls' High School - Ngā Rau Huia o Ākina.

Class Set of Casio Graphic Calculators

Exciting news!

Our Head of Maths, Mrs Peffer, entered our school into the Casio competition and we won a class set of calculators!  This will be a huge boost for our senior students’ learning.

A big thank you to Grant Gothard from Monaco Corp and @Casio for making this possible!

Leilani Brown Shines at Toitū Te Reo Festival's 'Slam Poetry' Competition

Congratulations to Leilani Brown for her outstanding achievement at the Toitū Te Reo Festival last week where she took home the top prize in the 'Slam Poetry' competition for young bilingual students. The competition centered around the theme 'Peace to the Heavens, Peace to the Earth' and participants had the option to perform either as a group or individually, in either Te Reo Māori or English.

Leilani chose to perform an individual piece, crafting a powerful poem about her rugby team, 'Moana Bay Girls.' Her poem highlighted the unity and strength of her team as well as their upcoming journey to France in 2025 where they aim to make a meaningful impact. Leilani's words beautifully wove together themes of humanity, moral values like family, personal identity, and spiritual values, encapsulated in the phrase "He waka eke noa"—a waka that we are all in together.

In a gesture that truly embodies the spirit of her team, Leilani donated her prize money to the Moana Bay Girls' fundraising efforts for their trip to France. With the guidance of her Nan and her deep understanding of the kaupapa, Leilani made the decision to enter the competition to help her team succeed in their funding process.

If anyone would like to support or contribute to the fundraising for this exciting trip, please contact the school and we will connect you with the organisers. More information about upcoming fundraising events will follow.

Well done, Leilani! We are all incredibly proud of you and your dedication to your team and community.

Giselle Rapaea's Journey: Exploring a Future in the Defence Force

Congratulations to Giselle Rapaea, Year 12, for taking part in an exciting day at Waiouru Army Camp alongside 11 other students from Hawke's Bay! This hands-on experience gave her a unique opportunity to talk to soldiers and see what life in the NZ Army is really like. Giselle’s willingness to explore opportunities like this has led her to a clear decision: the Defence Force is the pathway for her future!

"I really enjoyed the day because we got to see what soldiers do in their everyday life and see the different roles there are in the army. In the first term holidays, I attended an Air Force camp that I really enjoyed as well, so I did consider joining the Defence Force. Now, after going to the Army experience day, I'm sure I will join the Defence Force."

Well done, Giselle, for your determination and commitment to exploring your future career!
