Term Three Week 3

Message from the Principal

Kia ora koutou
This term, our focus value is whakaute. Whakaute is about acknowledging the mana of others, showing kindness, and treating everyone, including ourselves with dignity. The value of whakaute will be a focus through the junior curriculum, with Ākina Groups setting goals around this. Students will explore what whakaute might look, sound, and feel like in their daily interactions, fostering a culture of mutual respect and understanding.

It was wonderful to see many of our families at our Senior Whānau Hui/Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday evening. With the end of the year rapidly approaching, it is more important than ever to work together in supporting students to meet their learning goals. Knowing exactly where they are at with their learning, identifying any current barriers, and understanding what the next steps are, is one way of doing this. These conferences are a vital opportunity for whānau, students, and teachers to collaborate and ensure that every student has the support they need to succeed.

Big Day Out was a fabulous opportunity for our prospective Year 9 students in 2025 to experience our innovative junior curriculum firsthand. This special event is designed to give incoming students a taste of the vibrant and dynamic learning environment at Hastings Girls' High School. During Big Day Out, students had the chance to explore our unique hub system. These hubs are central to our junior curriculum, allowing students to delve into subjects through their areas of strength and interest. Throughout the day, prospective students participated in various hands-on activities and workshops tailored to showcase the diverse learning opportunities available at our school. The feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive, with many students expressing excitement about the possibilities that await them.

During their visit this term, the Education Review Office (ERO) engaged with students, whānau, and staff. Through these conversations, it became evident that one of our key strengths at Hastings Girls' High School is the strong sense of agency our students possess. We understand that this sense of agency takes time to develop and is closely tied to their sense of belonging. Our students' confidence in their identity and their feeling of belonging are crucial to their ability to take charge of their learning and make informed decisions.

ERO highlighted this in their feedback, stating: "Ākonga have a strong sense of belonging and are confident in their identity, language, and culture. Students have agency in their learning and in key decisions taken by the school."

This agency is nurtured through our commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel valued and respected. We encourage our students to take ownership of their learning, set personal goals, and actively participate in shaping their educational journey. This approach not only enhances their academic performance but also equips them with the confidence and self-efficacy needed to face future challenges and take on leadership roles.

We are continuously striving to create and enhance opportunities for our students to step into leadership roles. These roles allow them to build confidence, develop essential skills, and make meaningful contributions to our school community. We encourage students to make the most of some of the many opportunities currently available. Once new opportunity is service within the new school canteen. An important component of leadership is leading through service. We are inviting any aspiring leaders from years 11 and 12 to contribute to the running of the school tuck shop. This would include face to face service as well as preparation of some stock. In return, students would have their service recognised as part of our Ākina badge process, and a reference to support future aspirations.

Te Akatea Māori Principals & Māori Emerging Leaders Conference

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the annual Te Akatea Māori Principals & Māori Emerging Leaders Conference in Tauranga. This gathering was made even more special by the presence of our whānau from Te Whenua Moemoeā who traveled to be part of this significant kaupapa.

The conference was a convergence of minds and spirits, where leaders in kaupapa Māori and ākonga Māori shared their wealth of knowledge and experience. Each speaker, with their unique perspective and deep connection to Te Ao Māori, brought forth a message that resonated deeply with all in attendance. Their words were not just speeches but heartfelt affirmations of the importance of our cultural heritage and the future we are building for our tamariki.

The experience was more than just educational—it was emotional, motivating, and truly inspirational. Being surrounded by the nation’s leaders in Kaupapa Māori and Te Reo Māori was an honor. It reinforced the importance of the work we do every day to uplift and empower our communities, ensuring that the next generation carries forward the legacy of our tīpuna with pride and purpose.

As we return to our respective roles, the lessons and stories shared at the conference will undoubtedly guide and inspire our continued efforts. This conference was not just an event; it was a reminder of our collective responsibility to lead with mana, grounded in the values and traditions that define us as Māori.

Together, we stand strong, inspired, and united in our journey to uplift kaupapa Māori and the educational aspirations of our ākonga Māori. The future is bright, and with the strength of our whānau behind us, we will continue to lead with purpose and passion.

NZCBA Festival 2024

On Friday, 2nd August, the Concord Band, composed of musicians from Hastings Girls' High School and Lindisfarne College, traveled to the University of Waikato to participate in the annual New Zealand Concert Band Association Festival.

Six of our talented musicians played within the Concord Band, a long-standing partnership between HGHS and Lindisfarne College. The journey began with a visit to Waipahihi School in Taupō, where we delivered an outstanding performance for the students before heading to Cambridge for an overnight stay.

Saturday started bright and early, as we made our way to the Gallagher Performing Arts Centre to support band members in the solo section. That afternoon, the Concord Band gave a high-standard performance, earning a Silver trophy for their efforts.

It was a fantastic weekend of music-making, with our students representing HGHS brilliantly on a national stage.

Chemistry Trip to Massey University

Last Friday over 30 Level 2 and 3 Chemistry students had the wonderful opportunity to visit Massey University to experience campus life firsthand. The students spent two hours in the chemistry lab extracting anthocyanins from red cabbage and blueberries using a reflux method. They then applied several analytical techniques on the extract including visible light spectroscopy and thin-layer chromatography. This hands-on experience allowed them to engage with real-world scientific processes and deepen their understanding of chemistry.

Lunch in the dining hall cafeteria provided a taste of student life, offering a glimpse into the daily routines of university students. Following lunch they toured the spectroscopy labs and witnessed demonstrations of advanced techniques such as Raman spectroscopy which uses lasers, and IR spectroscopy.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (NZIC), the Secondary-Tertiary Alignment Resource (STAR), Massey University and the for supporting this visit. Their contributions made this enriching experience possible for our students.
