Young Enterprise Scheme

Our Year 12 and 13 Business Studies students participated in the annual Young Enterprise pitch presentations to a panel of business experts. Our students have been working hard this year developing both small businesses and products as part of their learning. The pitch provides a great opportunity to gain experience in promoting and communicating their business vision, product and financial information. Our students are working on a diverse range of product ideas such as pet food, jewellery, makeup, bird boxes and tote bags. During Term 3 each business team will put this learning to the test in two market days, both at school and at the Hastings Farmers Market.

Sports Update

Netball Draw

Netball

This past Saturday morning our six Netball teams suited up to compete. With injuries and sickness lingering in the winter months our Senior Tui team stepped up to support their training buddies Senior B. You’d be right in thinking that perhaps there could be a lack of cohesion however the chemistry was on point and the team came together earning a comfortable but well fought 32-13 win over Iona.

Junior Kahu have their work cut out for them in the Junior Premier team but were lead to victory by Deputy Principal and sports extraordinaire Emma Jensen. We can’t give her all the credit though as Junior Kahu went on to convincingly beat Napier Girls 27-12.

Coach Dion Te Ahu has taken charge with our Junior Huia team. Proving they're a well-oiled machine defeating St Joseph's Māori Girls 28-20. We were fortunate that Dion took Kahu under his wing for training this week which has proven to be beneficial for our top Junior squads.

It ain’t nothing new for our Junior Kiwi taking flight with another triumph this time over Taradale 18-1. With a trio of parents supporting Junior Kiwi this year we know your dedication shines through sometimes in wins but mostly in the students' ongoing commitment to 8am games!

Senior Tui shone in a dominant performance over Sacred Heart 24-6. Coach Tiute has been working the Tui hard since early February and it looks like team work is making the dream work.

Finally Junior Korimako were triumphant 11-10 in a challenging match against Iona. Student Coach and Senior A player, Ani Dickey, is certainly flexing her leadership skills with the backing of Science Teacher, Mrs Monique Goodson.

As we near the halfway point of the season it’s smooth sailing and we’d like to take the time to thank our coaches, kōhine and parents for your sportsmanship and manaaki.

SENIOR A / ĀKINA
Unfortunately the game did not end up how we wanted it to for the Akina Netball team on Tuesday night. Flaxmere came out strong in the first quarter and we did not meet them with the same intensity. We were down by 10ish goals leading into the second half and with a tough and intensive fight back we managed to come within 4 at the final whistle. There were a lot of positives and we are still in the early phase of the competition. We have a few things to work on moving forward and we hope to come out with more consistency and intensity for a full game next week!

Senior A had a bye this week.

Hockey

Our Hockey team played their first game in their new grade on Monday against NGHS Gold. Our team is a combination of newbies and experienced players and after a few weeks of learning about each other's skills and experience and how to play as a team it was fantastic for them to come away with a 6-0 win. Our goalie and backs had a more relaxing game but when called upon to defend, stepped up and shut down the Napier Girls attack. As the game progressed the connections between our midfield and forward players got stronger and were turned into points. Well done to our goal scorers, Khyiana, Elise and the NGHS player who accidentally deflected the ball into the goal to score us a goal.

Badminton

We are extremely proud to share that all our badminton teams won their games this week (with the exception of our D3 team who lost to our D1 team). We have 7 teams competing in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary School comp this season and have consistently had excellent results each week. We are grateful for the coaching the players are receiving from Kevin Deacon. They are learning so much and continuing to implement new skills and tactics to their game!

Football

The 1st XI Football Team have shown significant improvement over the first four games of the season. Last week they had a hard fought victory over the HNHS 2nd XI 2-0. This week they came up against a strong SHC 2nd XI losing 6-1; however, for periods of the game they showed the skills that should keep them competitive throughout the season.

Basketball

Ākina Senior Basketball

The Ākina Senior Basketball team have played four games this term. Because the team wanted to step up this year they joined the boys Junior Division 1 grade to help develop and challenge them. The team have played some great Basketball, improving every week. They even picked up a hard fought win against our brother school, Hastings Boys' Academy team. Our team players are constantly underestimated each week but come tip off they surprise the competition with their ability to compete against the boys.

Results:
Ākina vs NGHS Senior A                               90-38 to NGHS
Ākina vs HBHS Junior A                                103-29 to HBHS
Ākina vs HBHS Junior Academy                61-59 to Ākina
Ākina vs Whare Tapere                                 108-74 to Whare Tapere

Junior Kahu Basketball

Our junior girls are playing amazing. They have had three games this term; one game playing with the seniors and two in their own grade. They dominate on the court but also show great sportsmanship to the other teams.

HGHS Junior Kahu vs Napier Girls' High               108-0 to HGHS
HGHS Junior Kahu vs Karamu Junior                    62-14 to HGHS
