SPECIAL CHARACTER
Hastings Girls' High School was opened in 1955 and we are proud of our quality educational environment. Over its comparatively short history the school has established fine traditions of academic achievement, cultural involvement, sporting excellence and community service.
SCHOOL MOTTO
Our motto is ‘Akina’, which originates from the New Zealand Maori language meaning to strive hard at all times through mind, body and soul, and incorporate this value into learning and life.
LOCATION AND FACILITIES
Our school is very close to the Hastings city centre and a short driving distance to Napier City. Hastings and Napier are situated in the picturesque province of Hawke’s Bay (details attached). School facilities include an excellent library, modern computer suite, music suite, two gymnasiums, swimming pool, science laboratories, art rooms, graphics/design room, food technology suite, spacious sports fields and a Student Support Centre, all set in 7 hectares of park-like surroundings.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMME/SUBJECTS OFFERED
Our school prepares students for tertiary study offering a variety of subjects in small classes. A wide range of School Certificate, University Bursary and National Qualification Framework subjects are available. All courses are open to international students.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME
Many opportunities are available for participation in sports, drama, school choir and cultural groups, and the school encourages students to develop new interests and advance their talents both as individuals and as members of teams.
STUDENT WELFARE
Our Student Support Centre caters for the individual needs of students, with tuition available, if required, to improve subject performance.
Hastings Girls' High School values this contact with other cultures and has hosted students from Asia, Europe and North America. Hastings Girls’ High School observes and is bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Ministry of Education – view this Code on the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at http://www.minedu.govt.nz
The happiness and well-being of our students is of utmost importance to us and we strive to provide excellent care of them during their stay. Our school has an excellent pastoral care system with a full time Guidance Counsellor and experienced Deans at each level.
