Rangatahi Pānui

Term One Week 4

Congratulations to Caity & Tehia for being selected for Te Pae Poitarawhiti Ikaroa ki te Raki Team

We are super proud of Caity MacDonald and Tehia Taylor who are both in the Ikanui ki te Raki U19 Māori team that play an Easter tournament in Rotorua. Their waka is Te Pae Poitarawhiti Ikaroa ki te Raki (Wairoa to Ōtaki). Their selection into this team gives them the opportunity to be eligible for the NZ U19 Māori team that will be selected from this competition to represent NZ in Singapore later in the year.

Special Assembly on Monday

On Monday 26 February at 12.45pm we will be presenting our 2024 Student Leaders with their badges. The Assembly will begin with the karakia and the school song then the Student Leaders will receive their badges, read the oath and be officially welcomed in as HGHS Student Leaders.  We welcome whānau and anyone from our community who would like to support these students to attend the Assembly.

Swimming Sports

Next Friday 1 March is our Annual Swimming Sports at the Frimley Pools. Students are to come in their House colours (togs underneath) and go straight to their Ākina Class at 8.30am. Even though this is a fun day, it is still a school day so the roll will be taken and caregivers will be contacted if students are away. It's always a good vibe with fun relays like piggy back races, inflatable donut races and many more. We will also have our more competitive races as well. Whether you are an Olympian or a non swimmer there is a race for everyone. Participation equals House points so as long as students get in the pool at some time during the day their House will get the points.

Join a Committee

Being part of one of our school committees allows students to step up and show their leadership skills in a group setting. All committees are looking for a range of students with unique skills to bring to their respective committees. Please don't be shy; all our leaders are super friendly and would love to get the chance to meet you all! Spots will fill fast so please get in quick and put yourself forward in the best possible way - we'd love to get to know you!

Our four Committees/Councils:

Romeo & Juliet Performance

The Level 2 and 3 Music and Dance classes were lucky enough to go and watch Festival Opera's Romeo and Juliet held at the Napier Municipal Theatre. The performance was captivating and the ākonga were impressed by the moveable set and costuming and the super high soprano notes!!! For some, this was their first time at the opera and an experience they will never forget.

Universities Visiting HGHS

The first of our university visits start next week with Auckland University coming on Monday 26 February at 11.30am in the Library.

This is your chance to hear about what courses they offer and what the entrance requirements are, etc. Even if you're not sure what tertiary study you want to do when you leave school, come and listen - it may give you some ideas you haven't thought about. Even if you don't get your UE, many universities now offer bridging courses to pathway you into a degree.
